A lovely pair of melons

Are you fond of big juicy melons? If the answer is yes, then you should consider trying a yubari melon. They come from Hokkaido in northern Japan, and unlike other melons, have orange coloured flesh.

There’s only one problem. They are expensive. And sometimes ridiculously so. A department store had two such melons for sale over the weekend. Retailing at a cool 210,000 yen (1,050 pounds) each!

Ooooh, a cantalope! Very sweet, they are grown here in Maryland (US) and can be had at stands by the roadside in late summer for a dollar or so.

Cantaloupe, with what looks like a propeller on top. Odd. Molly or I could send you a crateful and you’d make a fortune re-selling them. They’re delicious with a little salt.

Actually theyre not just cataloupes apparently the soil and weather in that region in Hokkaido makes the worlds best cantaloupe (they even tried to re-create the growing condtions in the US but with no luck) I’ve had the priviledge to try this delicacy and I tell you, no cantaloupe I have eaten after that day has measured up- it was the most suculent perfect cantaloupe I’ve ever had- maybe not worth the price tag though. Oh yeah those “propellors” are the cantaloupes stem, its kept on the fruit for esthetic purposes (especially since you usually buy 2 at a time). I miss Hokkaido (not the winter though)
