A Japanese man on a military-style shopping mission?

For many men, myself included, shopping is such a hassle that some sort of military-like planning beforehand can ease the pain. A strategy that, providing there are no rogue shop assistants or unforeseen circumstances, should allow one to go in, make an exceedingly quick purchase, and then exit — immediately. Sanity intact and stress at a (hopefully) manageable level.

Others, however, appear to take the military element to a new and frightening level, modifying the misery into what would appear to be a full-on mission.

John Lennon glasses still selling in Tokyo?

It’s thirty-one years ago today that John Lennon died, but his face is still very visible in Japan. In fact, not just his face, but his distinctive facial wear too.

Now how many pairs they actually sell is anybody’s guess, but this shop appears to stock nothing but those instantly recognisable round glasses.

Imagine that.

Lost in time, in Tokyo?

Amidst the weekend shoppers, this old Japanese man looked completely lost in thought. And, in 2011 Tokyo, he also looked wonderfully lost in time.

Kimono celebration or sadness?

They may not be that uncommon, but the kimono is probably still a sight that it’s impossible to tire of. The patterns, and their almost timeless appearance, making them very difficult to pass by without a second glance — or sometimes even a stare. And as they are generally only worn for special events, there’s often a real sense of occasion about them too.

But with these two ladies, that inevitable second glance seemed to detect more sadness than celebration.
