Political suicide?

With suicide levels still at record highs, and the number of yearly victims stubbornly sticking above the 30,000 mark, the authorities are desperate to rectify the situation.

Yet despite his usually impeccable political astuteness, this recent picture of the wavy-haired Prime Minister appears to show a man singing from a very different song sheet.

Spectacular spectacles

“Nowadays, what women are looking for in men is intellect. And that’s why men wearing glasses are suddenly so hot.”

Psychologist Yasufumi Nagoshi in Spa! magazine, speculating on why men who wear glasses have become more attractive to women.

After suffering years of rejection, it would appear that young Suzuki-san’s time has finally come.

Costly calendar

To commemorate 15 years of selling ridiculously expensive and unbelievably extravagant gold calendars, jewellery shop Ginza Tanaka has upped the ante even further by producing a poster-sized version. The 1-milimetre-thick offering priced at a truly preposterous 20.06 million yen.

gold calendar

For anyone with more money than sense, the calendar contains 5.5 kilogrammes of solid gold; and for ease of use, weekdays are coloured blue, whilst Sundays and national holidays are resplendent in red.

However as the press release failed to mention it, having an engraver over to make a note of dental appointments and important birthdays will presumably cost extra.

Doddering defender

Whilst Japan is still relatively safe compared to many countries, crime levels are slowly rising. A situation that the media has been more than happy to exaggerate, gladly forfeiting balanced coverage for short-term commercial gain. The often sensationalist reports whipping up unnecessary fear and anxiety, especially amongst the elderly.

Resulting in some pensioners taking decidedly drastic defence measures.

Groinal grimace

Below is fairly innocuous looking statue. Perhaps even rather touching, with its apparent theme of unity and bonding.

Yet on closure inspection, it features a somewhat unsettling groinal grimace.
