Futuristic looking Tokyo cruise

Older, more rundown Tokyo, is what interests me the most, but now and again a nod to modernity isn’t such a bad thing. Cruising down the river on a sunny day isn’t such a bad way to spend the afternoon either.

This shot is so Neo-Tokyo LOL I’d wanna have microwave cupmen and a goofy gelpack sports drink while taking 3D snaps with my VR smartphone. Yay 21st century!

One of my fondest childhood memories though is pretty old school compared to all that: Ukai, cormorant fishing viewing on the Nagaragawa in Gifu – from a yakatabune; traditional party river boat. If you’ve never been on a yakatabune, give it a go sometime; good fun. I see some dockside in the pic there.

Haha, so very true. The bright, shiny future!

Still not something I’ve done, but heard nothing but similarly good things.

Ticking that box while seeing cormorant fishing though sounds absolutely wonderful. Always wanted to see that but as yet haven’t got round to it.

What a gorgeous sky – you’ve been having some cracking weather it seems. The water bus does look cool – somewhat akin to to spacecraft in the old Space 1999 TV series – and the wake suggests it barrels along at a fair clip.
I’m happy to say I’ve just booked our next visit to Tokyo and your photograph today captures several places we hope to (re)visit – Asakusa, Sumida Riverside, Water Bus and Sky Tree. Can’t wait 🙂

We have, although worryingly hot for this time of year. Looking like we could well be in for another very long, scorching summer…

Space 1999. That was a welcome blast from the past! And yeah, definite similarities.

Good news. Time for you to start planning!

That boat is actually designed by Leiji Matsumoto (Galaxy Express 999, Yamato, etc.). It operates out of Odaiba.

Yeah, I actually saw it passing the other Matsumoto designed boat, but I was on the wrong bridge to photograph it.

It does look fun, that’s for sure. Although I suspect it may be more interesting looking from the outside!

This looks like some vision of the future seen at a Worlds Fair Pavilion back in the 70’s.

Yeah, there’s definitely that element about it, isn’t there? A sort of retro future if that makes any sense
