Suburban Tokyo in the snow

It doesnโ€™t snow that often in Tokyo, and even when it does, itโ€™s generally not much. Monday, however, was slightly different, as somewhere in the region of 13 centimetres was dumped on the city’s more central areas โ€” the largest snowfall in 4 years. A covering that not surprisingly caused chaos and congestion all over the capital.

Out in the suburbs, on the other hand, the day was relatively peaceful. Or at least it was away from the train stations. And while still not exactly pretty, the snow did at least make things prettier.

Interesting set of shots. I like them. Gotta admire the guy cycling through that with an umbrella! What was he thinking? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Thanks. Yeah, simply cycling in that must have been tough, but even more so with the umbrella. A man intent on not walking home!

He was. That said, it was amazing how many people I saw out on bikes. Why they didn’t just leave them til the next day I don’t know…

Apparently boring old snowmen just don’t cut it in Tokyo, the locals are much more creative –

Wow, they are quite something, aren’t they? Saw a cat/rabbit shaped thing the other day, but nothing compared to those.

You are very welcome. Until my hands got cold towards the end, I thoroughly enjoyed being out in it to be honest. A very nice change.

Yeah, still see those old smoking slogans every now and again. And fittingly it really was a day for a sundrug!

Can’t beat a decent fall of big fluffy snow. (If you don’t have to travel).
My Tokyo weather gadget has been indicating snow unusually. Great to see some photographs. You’ve spoilt us with this collection. Hmm, casting an eye to the weather at the minute it says 05:35 Starry skies and -4. Brr.
I spotted those Buddha eyes again in the window.

@ Martin B, love those snowmen. Very creative.

Very true. I was lucky I didn’t have to use public transportation. Some of the scenes of trains, and in particular trains stations, were just horrid. There were queues to simply get inside some stations, let alone get anywhere near an actual train…

Been blue skies since the snow on Monday, but yeah, very cold. Those night time/early morning temperatures are unusually cold for Tokyo. Looking like that’s going to continue on into the weekend too.

Those eyes are everywhere. Don’t know if they are still making them, but initially they must have made an awful lot.

The umbrellas seem to be the eye-catcher in many of these shots. But they don’t really seem to help much. The lass without one seems just fine. Thanks for capturing these lovely shots!

You are very welcome. Glad you liked them.

Yeah, they really did stand out. And I agree, they weren’t a great deal of use at all. I used one to try and keep my camera dry, but it didn’t help much.
