The green and space of Tokyo’s far west

On overcast days in particular, Tokyo’s seemingly never ending urban sprawl can often appear as grey as it is gargantuan. Head out to the city’s far west, however, and things are different — both in looks and atmosphere. So different in fact that it can be hard to fully grasp that such a green and sparsely populated area is still part of the capital.

These then are photos from a recent walk there. A long walk for sure, but one that started and ended with the ease and convenience of Tokyo’s public transportation network.

Love that woman’s fashion sense, I want to dress like her when I get old 🙂

That twelfth? photo, is that a pile of newspapers that kept getting delivered for years??

My thought exactly! (the mail pile – not the dress :-))

The old lady was lovely. A really nice encounter.

Yeah, newspapers. We thought it must be junk mail at first, but no, all newspapers. Goodness knows how long they were delivered for…

Exceptional work, Lee. Beautiful and sad with so many questions. I could pour over these photographs all evening.

Agreed that these are both beautiful and sad…even poignant. Thanks

Thanks a lot. A fascinating area for sure, and one with so many untold stories.

So much useful stuff and building material going to waste – I guess in a country where there are so many abandoned houses to be had for little or nothing, there’s not much incentive to repurpose them? I could absolutely use that wash basin and the steel cladding on that shed!

I’ve often wondered how much (or indeed little) of abandoned homes and buildings gets recycled. My guess is not a lot.

But yeah, with so many places like this, not many will get used again.

For some reason these and others of yours like them seem to reach out of the screen and envelope you in a pleasant cool green.
    But, oh the horror!
How can someone have abandoned that wonderful phone so heartlessly!

Thanks a lot. That is really good to hear.

But yeah, the phone. Just casually dumped there…
