Another excellent photograph to put in your Staring section.
I saw a program about a few old ladies who came into Tokyo by train with bags like that full of produce from their farms. They set themselves up just outside the station, did a brisk trade, and when all was gone retuned. They’ve been doing it since the post war black-market days, though today there are only very few left. I wonder if this was one of them.
A hard, hard way to make a living. Even for someone in their prime. But, in the documentary at least, they seemed happy enough.
Another thought is a film I saw recently which touched on a Japanese legend of a character with a huge basket who threw unruly children into it and carried them away.
I think I prefer the produce seller option 🙂
That sounds very interesting. Good to hear it still happens too, although sadly not for that much longer. Probably not quite the same, but I always used to enjoy seeing this woman setting up shop and selling fruit and veg near Ueno. Not her seen her for her long time now though…

Yeah, she wasn’t best pleased that’s for sure, but thankfully the dirty look was as far as things went.

Haha, yes, definitely the more preferable option!
