Tokyo’s many glitzy emporiums offer all the brands it’s possible to think of — and many more it’s not. But for real character, and a glimpse of how Tokyo once was (and to a certain extent still is), the city’s old and family run shops are far more interesting, if not exactly fashionable.

I’m a big fan of these places too. Real character, and characters.

Yes, I agreed that old and family run shops are more interesting and I think they are beautiful!! 🙂
Is the uncle in the picture the shopowner?
Love this Picture!!

Cheers Winnie. I’m pretty sure he’s the owner. My guess is that he’s sat in that spot for many many years.

Welcome home Lee, nice weather up north?
I see lots of little shops lilke this, even in expensive areas, so I wonder how they sell enough to survive given the high rents involved.
Lee says
Thanks Ken. Nah, bloody awful. This is our second day without rain though, so things are at least getting better!
That’s what I always wonder, especially so as many of them seem to get very few customers. The only thing I can think of is that they own the building/land. And have done so for years — possibly generations — so there are no extra costs involved.
