All bases covered?

It’s often said that when the Japanese start something new, especially if it’s a sport or hobby, they go in for it in the biggest way possible, by immediately buying an absolute glut of the very best gear large pots of cash can purchase. Everything, basically, bar the proverbial kitchen sink.

However, it’s a notion that, if one looks a little closer, is clearly a load of codswallop.

Especially American football, no refs in striped shirts or a scoreboard they can’t play.
Also catch a fishing show from the US or UK and it’s just guys in jeans and flannel. Here, 40 yen poles to catch bait fish. Kids don’t know the joy of going to a park and getting a game together.

Yes, jumpers for goalposts I can’t ever see catching on…

It’s taken me quite a bit of effort to get Japanese folks in town to realize that it IS indeed possible to play a game of soccer every weekend with just a ball.

But now they’re ok with the idea AND convinced that it’s ok to drink a few beers before and during the game.

    Globalization rocks

That’s quite an achievement, although I must admit I already see a lot of pre-game ciggies, so I guess a drink or two isn’t such a massive step!

Globalisation may or may not rock, but patronising others most certainly doesn’t. Why can’t the ‘Japanese folks’ you speak of enjoy their weekend game of soccer in their own way, without you sticking your nose in?

The Japanese are an highly idiosyncratic people. If they weren’t, this wonderful photo – indeed this whole blog – would not exist.

      Plurality rocks, Craig.

I am currently taking golf lessons in Japan. One of the retired guys who is in my class has no equipment what so ever. He arrives at the driving range empty handed and borrows clubs. He figures once he gets good enough he will get some clubs. I used to be a big believer in the generalization you mention. However, like most things in Japan it helps if you look just a little below the surface.
