Mildly amusing English usage #4

Handsome boy

Having just recently returned to school after the long summer holiday, it has to be said that I haven’t exactly been Mr. Jolly. But today my mood was lightened somewhat, as one of the students very kindly called me a handsome boy

Now sadly it’s quite a few years since I could realistically be labeled a boy, and even on my more optimistic days, classing myself as handsome would raise a few eyebrows to say the least. But that said, who can argue with the wise words of a 14-year-old schoolgirl? Ok, almost anybody, but that’s hardly the point.

No, the point is that I’m now officially a handsome boy. Success, wealth, and happiness await!

Captain calamity

In Osakikamijima, Hiroshima, an old man suffered a dislocated shoulder when his house was destroyed by an out of control cargo ship.

Masuo Hamada, the captain of the Shintsunetoyo-maru, admitted to falling asleep in the early hours of Saturday morning as he was guiding the ship to Tokuyama Port in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Coast guard officials were said to be questioning Mr. Hamada (providing he can keep his eyes open that is), and it’s thought he will face charges.

Fortunately, 76-year-old Haruo Abe’s dislocated shoulder was the only injury suffered by those affected. Although Abe-san’s house (and 2 neigbouring one’s) didn’t fare quite so well.

Motivational madness

“Since we started to play the ‘Rocky’ song, staff members have become more interested in the entire store’s business.”

Shimonoseki Daimaru department store spokesman Takahiro Yamaguchi, on how store muzak can raise employee morale.

Yeah, I’m sure the store’s employees simply can’t wait to get to work in the morning…

Platinum pussy

In another unfathomable celebration of Hello Kitty’s 30th anniversary, the Mitsukoshi department store has a diamond encrusted platinum kitty-chan for sale. The 41mm tall Queen kitty is priced at a staggering 10.5 million yen (53,000 pounds).

Is the famous feline really worth such extravagance?

Sadly it would appear so.

Sensational samba

Sadly I was out of the country when Asakusa hosted its annual samba festival. But seeing as it’s such a culturally significant event, I feel the least I can do is show a couple of pictures from this year’s procession.

And so as not to appear sexist in anyway, here’s a picture of one of the male performers.
