Shinto shivers

Today I was lucky enough to witness something I had previously only ever seen on TV. A man (presumably a Shinto Priest) praying underneath a waterfall.

Now whilst not the biggest waterfall in the world, as you can see from the picture below, there’s snow on the ground. Plus it’s situated halfway up a mountain, so I don’t need to stress how cold it must have been.

Unfortunately access was blocked and I couldn’t get very near. But having said that I guess it’s fair enough, as in the unlikely event of me trying something similar, I wouldn’t want a crowd.

Once under the water the hardy young man did a lot of shouting/praying. And after a few minutes (yes, it wasn’t a quick dash in and out) he emerged to gave a final and hearty Thank you very much to whichever god(s) he was praying to.

I would liked to have asked him how often he prays like this and how on earth he manages it, but he quickly darted off to a nearby building. Presumably to get himself dried off and warm. Or there again, perhaps to stick hot needles in his legs.

After what he’d just subjected himself to, who knows?

Cock-a-doodle-do

Well, the Year of the Monkey is fast drawing to a close, making way for 2005 and the Year of the Cock (or Rooster even).

A situation that creates an ideal opportunity to indulge in a bit of schoolboy humour. Meaning I could post a picture like this.

Or even this.

But I won’t…

Happy New Year!!

For Chist’s sake!

Personally, if I were producing an item of clothing bearing the name of a famous personality or film (or in this case a combination of the two), I’d probably give the spelling a quick check before the design was finalized.

Not so the makers of a rather colourful baseball cap I came across recently. As is always the case in these situations, I didn’t have a digital camera with me. Having to make do with my rather limited camera phone. But that said, the design’s glaring error is still clearly visible in all its misspelled glory.

Festival fun

On my way down to the train station yesterday, I was fortunate enough to run into a small local festival. An event that mostly involved the men folk carrying a mikoshi — a (not so) portable shrine — up the street.

Their progress was as slow and unsteady as you would imagine, but the accompanying beat of a huge drum seemed to help spur them on.

But the cheeky chap sat atop the drum undoubtedly had the best job of the day.

The life of Mel

Mel Gibson’s The Passion Of The Christ has recently hit these shores, and despite Japan not being a Christian country, the film appears to be doing reasonably well.

I haven’t seen it yet, but I have read a lot of the wildly fluctuating reviews and views of it. Yet none of them matched the wit of Monty Python star Eric Idle’s quote I found in The Observer.

“I gather Mel doesn’t handle the comedy too well, and he seems to totally ignore the singing opportunities of the crucifixion.”
