Freebie fracas

Maybe it was due to the euphoria of Japan winning the inaugural World Baseball Classic, or alternatively the simple pleasure of bagging a freebie, but whatever the reason, several women were injured in a melee on Tuesday surrounding the handing out of Extra newspaper editions marking the nation’s against-the-odds sporting triumph.

The unfortunate ladies were ignominiously pushed against a concrete flower box and then to the ground as a throng of 50-60 people rushed at newspaper employees in possession of the Extras. A fortune-teller whose stall is situated nearby said the mob swarmed around the distributors, fought over the copies available, and shouted, “Cut it out,” “Ouch” and “Stop pushing.”

Whilst nobody was arrested over the incident, the police are allegedly still questioning the fortune-teller in regards to why, having obviously ‘seen’ the incident coming, he hadn’t done anything to prevent it.

Fishing fun?

After the daily horrors of his crammed commute, followed by the hustle and bustle of a Saturday morning supermarket, a gentle spot of fishing is the ideal weekend wind down for the stressed-out salary man; the rhythmic flow of the river and the odd tweet of a bird gently washing away the week’s woes.

Provided of course they can be heard over the moaning and mutterings of thousands of other want-away workers.

Sumo give away #3

Due to a rather convoluted link to the sumo world, I have once again managed to bag a few spare banzuke, this time from the fairly recent New Year tournament. Keeping one for myself, it leaves me with two that I’m willing to post off to Tokyo Times readers — irrespective of where they happen to reside.

sumo banzuke

This particular banzuke (pictured above) has unique historic value as it records Bulgarian Kotooshu’s promotion to Ozeki — sumo’s second highest rank; an achievement that is set to feature prominently in the sport’s record books, with the tall and athletic wrestler becoming the first European to reach such dizzy heights.

Being good-looking (and foreign), the quiet and unassuming Kotooshu is often referred to as the ‘Beckham’ of sumo, although due to my seating position I couldn’t really capture this aspect of the man — a clear shot of his ‘attractive’ back and side being the best I could muster.

For those interested, leave a comment below, and the two that interest or amuse me the most will receive a banzuke. Given sumo’s traditional nature however, all comments should be made in the form of a haiku, which if nothing else will help give proceedings the air of a real competition — or at least a dodgy fairground tombola.

As a reminder
It’s five, followed by seven
Then five to finish

Good luck to you all
I hope you can do better
Than this poor effort

Racing relaxation

As horse racing is often referred to as the ‘sport of kings’, then relaxing in a regal manner is arguably quite apt, these comfy and accommodating chairs even incorporating small tables for beverages and the obligatory cigarettes.

Plus with only short breaks between races, and elaborate headwear unnecessary, it’s possibly better than the real thing.

Minus the fun and excitement of course.

Sexy sumo

Regular readers of Tokyo Times who are more inclined towards viewing scantily clad men than women, may well complain of being continually short-changed on visits here. A charge that admittedly would be very difficult to argue against.

Yet that said, any underwear-sporting or flesh-baring young ladies that do appear on these pages, are in no way used for mere titillation. Rather, the coincidentally attractive and suggestively attired women just happen to be an integral part of events or news stories that due to their significance are impossible to ignore.

I mean, could the earth-shatteringly important release of another themed bra and panty set be left off these pages just because they include a slightly racy picture? Or when it comes to the burning media issues of the day, could omitting coverage of daytime TVs battle of the breasts be justifiable just because it contains a gratuitous image of some mammoth mammaries? Of course not.

Still, there’s no denying there remains an imbalance, so in attempt to redress the situation somewhat, here’s a picture of three beefy and bare-chested beauties.

But hold on a sec, there’s more here than meets the eye. Well, a little more anyway. Taken post-bout, the full image finds our three hunks relaxed and carefree, having rather alarmingly discarded their wrestling attire.

Needless to say, the picture is definitely not safe for work, but by clicking the image above a new and enlarged version will present itself. However whilst revealing a few minor details, it doesn’t give us any indication of what the three chaps were talking about. Or, judging by his hand movements, if the fella on the right was paying the slightest bit of attention.

*Special thanks (I think) to Louisa for the picture.
