Tranquil time out

Tranquil time out #46

Dotted liberally all over the land, Jizo are arguably the most discernible of Japanese deities. And, at the same time, have maybe the most miserable of meanings:

Traditionally, he is seen as the guardian of children, particularly children who died before their parents. Jizō statues are sometimes accompanied by a little pile of stones and pebbles, put there by people in the hope that it would shorten the time children have to suffer in the underworld. The statues can sometimes be seen wearing tiny children’s clothing or bibs, or with toys, put there by grieving parents to help their lost ones and hoping that Jizō would specially protect them. Sometimes the offerings are put there by parents to thank Jizō for saving their children from a serious illness.

However, as well as being sorrowful,

they can be strangely soothing.

With the ballyhoo over this year’s cherry blossom blooming rapidly heading towards the break out the blanket and beer time, and the weather on the whole warily getting a bit warmer, these wee fellas may well have to think about wearing something other than their winter woolies.

After a spot of cleansing,

some quality time with Kamakura’s distinguished Daibutsu,

is about as calming as a day out can be.

Provided, of course, one can cope with all the other people also after an impermanent piece of peace.

With temples decorously dotted all over Tokyo, there’s always the chance, should one want to seize it, of briefly breaking away from the hustle and bustle and settling down with some soothing sounds,

As clichés go, bamboo and a bit of water will always take some beating, but at the same time, it’s almost equally unconquerable when it comes to being calming.
