It may only be mid-October, but that hasn’t stopped my local supermarket from dusting off some merry merchandise. Yes, Christmas trees, lights and decorations are now good to go. After all, there are only 69 days of shopping left.
Not that the Japanese celebrate Christmas of course…

Yup, the Japanese attack Christmas in exactly the same way they attack any other merchandising opportunity. Full tilt, with a bit more added for good measure.
There’s usually a Christmas song of the year, too. One that, above all others, gets played absolutely to death.
These days, all I need is is the merest hint of Bruce Springsteen singing “Sa-a-a-anny Cloziz cummin t’town”, and I come out in a rash and start gibbering…

I always thought it was odd that most stores would play “Auld Lang Syne” to indicate that they were closing. It kind of messed up New Year’s Eve for me when I went back to the US for winter break since I had heard that song over and over and over for months.
I have fond memories of walking around Loft department store, admiring the fake Christmas trees that they sell. Natsukashii…
