Honour system

Crime in Japan is sadly on the rise, but compared to many other countries, it is still incredibly safe. Not only that, but thankfully there’s still a good deal of honesty about too. If you happen to leave your bag or wallet somewhere, there’s a very good chance you’ll get it back. Money and valuables still intact.

Along the same lines, it’s not uncommon to see shops such as this.

Customers are expected to just leave the money for whatever they buy. The amazing this is, they do. And nobody steals the money either!

Except gaijin of course.

Those kinds of shops still exist in the countryside, and still work most of the time. It’s only the scummy townies that ruin these ideas… people who grow up in the countryside respect the shops.

Mind you, I lived in the Japanese countryside for two years and my Japanese friends swear that they get thieved just as much as we do in the West. I asked them if they were perhaps exaggerating & told them my can’t-be-topped stories of employee theft. They had can’t-be-topped stories to make mine blush.

I think no matter where you live or what king of people live there, most people will not steal in a situation like this because the think they’re being watched. In any case, I’ll take two of those on the left, please. Domo.
