Just goes to show what can be achieved with a bit of imagination and the willingness to do a bit more than the bare minimum needed to do the job, architects and planners who come up with ugly great lumps such as Birmingham International train station could learn a few lessons here.
Yeah, it really is. This used to be a station as well. It’s still impressive now of course, but getting off the train there back in the day must have been incredible.
Yes, definitely. It was in Wakkanai, at the northern tip of Hokkaido. Used to be a train station many years ago which would have been even more impressive.
Concrete is an over maligned construction material. In the right hands it looks amazing – as in this most excellent photograph. Of course in the wrong hands it can look like a heap of wet cardboard boxes (like Basingstoke – a concrete cowpat I lived in for a couple of years).
Did you visit Cape Soya and take the obligatory shot of the monument? I have seen several NHK programs that feature that. Bleak at new year, that’s for sure.
Cheers, and yes, couldn’t agree more. This more than proves what can be done with it.
I did yes, although only briefly. Did take the obligatory photo along with the many other people doing the same thing. The coastline near there, however, was much more interesting. Bleak, but to me at least really quite beautiful. Got a set of photos that I’m quite happy with, so you’ll see them sooner rather than later.

Wow this is stunning! Great decision to go with black and white and include the lady in the shot. Great work!
Lee says
Thanks! Monochrome definitely seemed to be the way to go, and I got lucky with the lady — she walked by at just the right time.

Can you please say where that photograph was taken?
