Old Tokyo buildings and businesses are a constant theme of my work. Faded backdrops that say so much about the city’s past, as well as the countless stories connected with them.
That said, the addition of a person in the frame is something I always hope for. Not just any old person either, but someone with at least some kind of visual association — no matter how tenuous that may be. It could be age, demeanour, or simply the colours they are wearing. An element that in one way or another complements the overall image.
These then are recently taken shots along those lines. Several of them feature places I’ve photographed before, whereas others are first time finds.

Oh man that first one is so good! 🙂

Thanks a lot. I was very happy to get those two fellas in the frame. Made my day.

Very inspiring series! Very nice that it’s always one single interesting person entering the frame… your work does encourage me to be a little less shy about photographing people.

Thank you very much. That’s really good to hear. And it does take a while to get comfortable photographing people. Well worth the effort though.

This morning, I was wandering through Street View, looking for interesting buildings to make models of, when I found myself outside the liquor shop in the first photo. I have bookmarked the location, and maybe one day a shop inspired by it will be available for model railways.

It’s a very special place. Not many booze shops like that one that’s for sure.
