Wow, the guy has the air of James Cagney ( https://tinyurl.com/y9zk4sso).
I love the intimacy and complexity of these covered shopping streets, and their patina of age. So much more character than todays shiny malls.

He really does, doesn’t he? Sure he’d be quite pleased to hear that.

Likewise. It’s obviously limited in regards what’s on offer. Not exactly the cleanliest place in the world either. But like you say, it’s got absolutely bags of character.

I like this, it’s so different from the Tokyo I imagine. There’s so much for the eye to take in I didn’t see the old guy at first!

Cheers. Yes, quite different from what you usually see eh? That said, this place is a bit special. Never seen anywhere else quite like this in Tokyo, so definitely not the norm.

That’s another great expression. I can’t decide if he’s confused or angry at you! 🙂

I recall that expression from some Japanese art (paintings, theater makeup and masks, etc.).

That’s a very good call. Hadn’t thought about that at all, but yeah, there’s definitely a similarity.

Another classic look. That’s a very sad shotengai, isn’t it?

      It’s quite a good one, isn’t it?

Yeah, I suppose it is. That said, it’s one of my favourites. A fair bit of it is now shuttered up, but at the same time it has a couple of places that are really popular, so still plenty of life in the place yet.
