Old Tokyo?

No robots. No neon. No super busy crossings. Just Tokyo as it once was, and in so many ways, still is.

Old lady thinking to herself “These young people are getting stranger, they’re sitting in the middle of the road now”

Yeah, while it may look the same, the neighbourhood has clearly gone to the dogs!

I start to wonder what the future is of these neighbourhoods is in the run up to the Olympics. For the 1964 Olympics, most of these neighbourhoods were torn down, which really would be a pity as I do get tired of all the tall buildings they have been putting up in recent years.

Yes, in the race to modernise, there’s a very real danger that some of the city’s more interesting areas and neighbourhoods could disappear. Hopefully common sense will prevail, and a bit of thought will go into preserving some spots, but I’m not especially confident.

The area where I took this photo has changed considerably over the 5 or so years I’ve been going. A lot of the older houses have gone, to be replaced by apartment buildings and new homes. Not sure whether it’s the Skytree effect, cheaper land prices or the older residents slowly dying off. Maybe even a combination of all three. But whatever the reason, it’s definitely going to be a very different place in the coming years.
