Tokyo hat lover

Whatever one’s profession, it must be a real pleasure if it’s also a passion, and whether she owns the shop or not, it would seem that this young woman is very happy indeed to work as a hatter.

Wabi-sabi or simply wonderful?

Wabi-sabi is a fabulously vague concept that means a myriad of things to many different people. So much so, in fact, that it’s very hard to find any kind of agreement on what objects are (or invariably aren’t) wabi-sabi. And as any real definition is equally unforthcoming, it’s all down to feelings rather than facts.

The kind of feeling it turns out that my mother-in-law immediately got from the scene below.

Yet while I can see where she’s coming from, to me it’s simply beautiful. An ambiguity, along with its very personal preferences, that in many ways makes the notion of wabi-sabi even more wonderful.

Shibuya shades

With its bright lights and famed fashion, Shibuya is arguably the perfect place to be seen, and at the same time, not seen.

A body-less, but no less alarming, Japanese scarecrow

When coupled with bodies, mannequin head sporting Japanese scarecrows can be sombre and serene, as well as scary.

But without a body, they simply look sinister. Or is it sad?

For whom the (temple) bell tolls — twice

The sight and sound of this temple bell has featured on Tokyo Times before, but seeing it in use a second time, along with a differently decked out priest, meant that the opportunity definitely couldn’t be missed.

Unfortunately, however, the chance to make another recording was, so sadly the previous sounds will have to suffice.

Listen!
