The simple, solitary pleasure, of painting?

For a lot of people, landscape painting offers the perfect opportunity to get away from things for a little while. Plus, weather permitting, there’s also the added pleasure of some solitary time in the sun.

But, in a group-centric society, others, it would appear, still prefer to paint in packs.

Okamoto Taro’s Tower of Mother

Japanese artist, Okamoto Taro, once famously said that ‘art is explosion’; a concept that is certainly apparent in a lot of his work. His massive, Tower of Mother, on the other hand, is arguably far more serene than explosive — or at least it is on an equally serene and sunny day. But, when storm clouds roll in, it’s a very different story indeed, with possible cries of ‘Mother!’ having much less comforting meanings.

A dog wearing a samurai-style chonmage wig

As our eyes met, he knew, that I knew, that we both knew, that a dog wearing a samurai-style chonmage wig is silly to say the least.

And so, as I took his photo, with him looking so foolish, I also knew that he’d never forgive me.

The sight and sound of a talented violinist in a Tokyo park

Presumably it’s because of an inability to practice at home, where neighbours would likely complain about the noise, but whether that is the actual reason or not, it’s still always nice to see musicians playing in public places.

And the fella photographed below was certainly no different. The sight, and indeed the sounds,

only adding to the simple pleasure of an afternoon spent in the park.
