Photo series: Old Tokyo, and Tokyo’s old

With two of my main photography themes being Tokyo’s ageing population and the faded facades of the capital’s old buildings, it makes sense to combine them whenever possible. Unfortunately, opportunities don’t present themselves very often, but when they do, they make for interesting snapshots of Tokyo.

Scenes that hint at the city’s past, are a prominent slice of its present, but probably won’t be a big part of the future.

This is a great series. I wonder what tiny building was in the empty lot in the fourth one. I guess the ones on either side are pretty skinny too.

Thanks! Yeah, I wondered that too. Clearly been a while since it was pulled down, but very likely a shop of some kind. But what kind of shop shall remain a mystery…

These make an interesting set. Kinda sad but uplifting. I like the “slice of life” feel to them. 🙂

Cheers! Yeah, decay and resilience I guess.

Good to hear. Definitely regular scenes, from regular life.

With those socks it is as if the blue sign is just for her.
There’s a ‘Tokyo Lowry’ in this set!

I know eh? She matches perfectly. One of those lovely bits of luck that occur now and again.

Oh, yes. Hadn’t looked at them in that way. Doubly nice to read as I’m from the region Lowry painted. An artist I sort of grew up with as his paintings were so well known.

A great collection of photographs on a theme. There is so much to discover in these.
The matching colours of the brown coat and rust, and the pink coat and shop sign stand out, but my favourite is the one with the stone catflap/goblin hole which has tones of lilac in the mans bag, right and left window coverings, and the wooden lintle/beam across the whole building.

      Thank you!

It’s always good when there are colour matches like that. I sometimes see them before, but more often than not they come as nice surprises afterwards. The rust and brown coat I did notice, but then suddenly felt real pressure to get the shot, as I’ve stood in that same spot countless times waiting for somebody interesting to pass and it has never happened. So with a chance at last, I really didn’t want to mess it up. Fortunately I’m quite pleased with the result, so I can stop hanging about there quite as often now!
