For something a bit different, this is a set of photos taken from The Vanishing World. A zine of mine produced by Bump Books.
For a lot of my work that gets published, I choose the photos, and quite often the sequencing of them too. At other times, simply a single or small number of images are requested.
The process for The Vanishing World, however, was completely different, as the photographs were chosen without my input, which made seeing the resultant selection and the order they were arranged in genuinely interesting. They represent a far more objective take than I could ever manage, as invariably I have all kinds of associations with the photos I take.
A collection then that I’m very happy with. Only one photo was swapped out in the end, and that was for a similar shot from the same location.
The zine itself is also well made, dimensionally quite small (210mm x 148mm), but at the same packed with 25 photographs. Printed in the UK, it is available from Bump Books, but I have a limited number of signed copies available that I’m offering at a reduced price in combination with an A4 print of the overgrown car shot below — or a different print if you get in touch before ordering. Available from my shop here should you be interested, with free worldwide shipping included.

Brilliant idea. Can’t fault the selection – the two with trios especially. I’ve been a fan of ‘zines since ZigZag in the seventies, a wonderful way to get youself out there. I remember Foyles being a good place to grab a few – been a while since I visited though. Likewise Affleck’s Palace was another place. A good thing to have on hand at exhibitions too. I have a couple from short term (popup?) photograph exhibitions in Shibuya in recent years.

Thank you. Yeah, it works really well. A very interesting experience.
Definitely something I need to do more of. I’d like to make my own as well, but will need to look into that more and see what’s involved.
Ah, Affleck’s Palace. A favourite old place of mine. Went back last summer and while different, it still felt nicely familiar. The biggest change was me being a hell of a lot older that when I first visited.

What a great collection, Lee. I like the mix of life and decline. I think that captures the essence of your work.

Thank you very much. What I was hoping for, so that’s really good to hear.

I ordered the zine from Bump Books. Getting mail from overseas to the US is kind of problematic lately so I am resigned to the idea that I may or may not ever get it. Wish me luck!
Lee says
Oh, wonderful. I hope you like it. And fingers crossed it gets there. Sure it will.

it’s here already! wow, not at all what I expected to happen, from what’s been going on with my mail from Japan lately.
It’s really wonderful. Excellent choices, very nice printing. I would subscribe to this as a monthly magazine 🙂

Brilliant. Thanks for letting me know. Very glad it arrived safely and that you like it. More would be nice, but not sure about monthly!
