Portrait of an expressive old Japanese lady

As inscrutable expressions go it’s a good one, but at the same time it’s as appealing as it is impenetrable.

Very cool. I really like her expression and the setting. Fantastic framing as always! 🙂

Thank you. It was all there just as I was walking past. The setting as well as the expression. It was then just a matter of quickly pressing the shutter!

Thank you! It was a lovely scene that unexpectedly just presented itself. Always nice when that happens, and especially so when the subject is as interesting as this old lady.

A marvellous portrait. Whilst the lady is the undoubted main focus, the aloe plants catch my eye – possibly because we have a few in one corner of the garden – and the details on the left like the lantern, umbrella and sake bottle. Is it a drinking establishment next door? Is that why the lady looks inscrutable, because she lives next to it, or perhaps she is the patron? Very clever and thoughtful of you to leave that part of the scene in.

I get habitualized to technology and the data delivery we are lucky enough to get these days. And sometimes that manifests itself in ways that amuse me. For example I sometimes find myself clicking on your photographs and trying to pan up or across to see more. Definitely the case with this one.

      Thanks.

Yes, it is. Don’t know how busy or noisy it is as I’ve only passed there in the daytime, but yeah, that could well account for her expression, as my guess is she isn’t connected to the place. Well, apart from being physically connected property-wise!

Haha, if only that was possible eh? At the same time, it’s sometimes better to imagine what lies beyond the frame, rather than know for certain.
