Random Tokyo portraits from recent walks

It’s not always possible to put photos into a theme, or tell a story. Certainly not one that’s genuinely cohesive anyway. So instead then, these are simply random Tokyo portraits taken on some of my recent Tokyo photowalk tours. Images that if nothing else give a sense of daily life in the Japanese capital.

Many great subjects here, Lee. Terrific work as always.

Thanks a lot. Definitely had the good fortune to see and meet quite a few interesting people.

What’s your process for shooting street portaits? Straight up Winogrand-style ambush? Something more subtle? Interesting mix of reactions here.

It all depends really, and this set pretty much covers most of them.

The majority were shot candidly. Most common for me and generally the approach I prefer. But a few were taken while talking to the person. Plus 1 and 4 I asked if I could take a portrait.

Thank you. I like how those two came out as well. The fella was very happy to have his photograph taken as well which made it extra nice.
