Shinjuku Tiger: The man and the movie poster

For regular visitors of Shinjuku, the sight of an older fella cycling the streets in a colourful, toy adorned outfit probably won’t come as a surprise. And considering the gentleman in question is Shinjuku Tiger, neither will his ubiquitous tiger mask.

Having worn the mask and unique ensemble since 1972, he has understandably become a part of the landscape. In fact, considering how much Shinjuku has, and is changing, he’s arguably one of the entertainment district’s few constants. A factor that presumably played a part in the decision to make a film about him. The subtitled trailer of which can be seen here.

And below, sat next to the movie’s promotional poster, in his regular haunt of Golden Gai, is Shinjuku Tiger himself.

What an interesting story and person! I had never heard of him. I can’t imagine how terrible that mask gets in summer.

He really is. But yeah, both the mask and his outfit must be pretty unpleasant in summer…

      You are very welcome.

It really is. No half measures for Shinjuku Tiger, although I suspect he has a large collection of masks!

I’ve been to Shinjuku so many times over so many years, but have never seen him in person. I was starting to think he was just another urban myth lol.

Haha, happy top confirm he is for real. I was in Shinjuku today actually and saw him again, albeit fleetingly. Maybe next time you are there!

What an amazing story – and wonderful photographic opportunity.
Will the full feature run with subtitles I wonder? Maybe it will be amongst the in-flight movies in a couple of weeks time 🙂

He really is a fascinating man, isn’t he? And yes, seeing him there next to the poster was a real treat.

Good question. I’d like to think they’ll at least release a version with subtitles. It surely won’t make the in-flight list, but if you are lucky, it may get a limited subtitled release while you are here.

I await the day when I see a photo on this website/blog of my favorite local character: Funabashi’s unofficial mascot, Funassyi! 🙂

Never say never, but it could be a long wait. Although Tokyo being Tokyo, maybe not!
