Slightly disturbing Japanese dolls

There are various kinds of dolls in Japan, from the decidedly dodgy, to the much more decorative, and now it seems there are also the disturbing.

Or, at the very least, effigies that are strangely,

and, it has to be said,

somewhat sinisterly,

unsettling.

Saw them on my recent trip to Kyushu. After the special attack units haikyo, we went to the Kamikaze museum in Tachiarai, and they were at the station there. Definitely would not want any of them in my house…

Terrific photos. I echo the same question; where did you find these to snap the shots? I am curious about the history of these. Thanks again for sharing!

They were at the station at Tachiarai (linked in the above comment), and by all account were made by an old woman who lives (or maybe now lived) in the area.

I presume they just caught up the mood from that place. Those ideas are quite strange to me, but may be more common in Japan. hell I also lives in a different culture, and wonders sometimes.

    Merry Christmas Lee

I have to agree with konezumi. Especially the second doll looks really nice, I wouldn’t mind placing it on my bookself. A case of eye of the beholder I suppose…
