Tsukiji fish market looks like an incredibly tough place to work, so perhaps not surprisingly, the fellas who work there are suitably tough looking.

He wasn’t sure *how* he was going to fit the sperm whale inside his van, but Ryo “Dr. Strange” Nordquist had his reputation to think of, so failure was not an option. He had, after all, on one occasion fit four tons of Wurlitzer pianos in the back of this very same delivery van without a scratch, while on another the entire string section of the Tokyo Symphony orchestra and their instruments in cool comfort without missing a note, and, in his most astounding feat of defeating the very laws of physics, stuffed an entire delivery van—with a full load of its own—inside. So, come hell or high water, Dr. Strange was going to deliver a sperm whale.
That really would be something, although judging by his looks, I wouldn’t put anything past him!
A whole whale seemed pretty much the only thing I didn’t see at the market. A truly mind boggling array of life from the sea. Although that said, I did see parts of a whale…
His appearance made me think of a scene from a 1970s film for some reason.
Cheers. Very pleased with the way this one came out. Turned round just as we were about to leave and there he was. Quickly lifted the camera and happily he didn’t change his position or look at all, so maybe he is accustomed to it. He’s definitely very photogenic.
I know eh? Compared to the dilapidation and general refuse of a fish market, its gleaming nature stood out all the more. That’s the only view I got of it, however, so have no idea, although the rust visible at the bottom suggests it at least isn’t brand new.
This might be my favorite picture you’ve taken this year. It is so perfect it almost looks stage. Absolutely awesome timing. Lee you are an amazing photographer!
Thank you very much. That’s really, really kind of you.
Have to admit I’m more than happy the way it came out. Like you say, it’s all set up perfectly. It was just as we were about to leave too. I just happened to look round and there he was. Just thankful nobody was in the way and I got one clear shot. Very much right place at just the right time!

A scene from “Enter the Fish Market.”?
A splendid portrait, almost like he is accustomed to it, or waiting for the grand piano and jazz trio warm up.

Great moment! I don’t know which I love more, his expression or the shininess of his truck! 🙂
Lee says
Thanks! A tough call. Both very striking in their own way, although I think the fella would be interesting in any situation.
Ex-expat says
What strikes me is the near antiseptic cleanliness of the truck’s cargo area….unless that’s a brand new truck.

Yep, this one is ALL about the shiny interior of that truck, makes the whole picture for me.
Lee says
It was a wonderful gift. Turned round and there he was in those incredibly shiny surroundings. A scene that totally made my day.
Marcin says
The truck interior and his pose make it look almost like a still from some techno music video 😉
Lee says
It’s definitely a distinctive look, isn’t it? Timing wise I was very lucky.
Guillermo says
Are you sure it’s a Blue Steel and not a Ferrari look? 😉
Lee says
Haha, you can ask him. I was happy to take his photo, but I wouldn’t want to risk making him angry!
Guillermo says
Good call, Lee 😉
