Regardless of whether it’s hot or cold, fine or otherwise, this old Buddhist monk is almost always stood in the same spot. A display of patience and commitment that is nothing short of incredible. He diligently prays. Rarely seems to receive offerings. And when unintentionally provoked by an impolite foreigner, the displeasure he showed was characteristically fleeting.

Ha! One of my co-workers is a Buddhist and my joke always is ” When Q drives, he’s no longer a Buddhist!” Probably this guy is no Buddhist when it comes to foreigners, impolite or not.

I’ve heard it said numerous times that many of these Buddhists are anything but. Instead they are just dressed up to get some easy money. A fair few of them do look suspicious as well. This fella, however, seems different. I see him so often, and he seems to get so little money, that he must be in it for the devotion.

Ha, one of those stares. Again!! 😉

Yes, it is something of a theme, isn’t it…? Clearly my winning smile isn’t so winning!

Is he at Ueno? If so, the last time I was there he was next to a pseudo-Peruvian pipe band.
Lee says
Yes, that’s the spot. Poor man. Nobody should have to put up with that…

Great detail – the photograph is so sharp. I found a few of your photographs of this guy, enough to make him probably think, “Again?”. There is one of him (I think) in front of an LV store – which is more of a statement than a devotion. Under the bridge there though it must just be footfall he’s after.
I like the detail on the fence post his bag is hanging on. A leaf motif on the top and a flower on the side. I love it that such municipal functional things are given such care and attention. I like the way he has covered the graffiti with the strap of his bag, though last january he left it visible.

Thanks. Yes, quite possibly. I’d like to think this is the only time he’s seen me, but that could well be wishful thinking…
Ah, the one near the LV store wasn’t him. I’ve only ever seen him in this particular spot. There’s another monk in this same area, but he tends to do his thing on the other side of the street. Often wondered if they speak. Hang out even. But never seen them together.
Yes, details like that are always lovely finds. So many of them too.

Great shot! Thanks

Thanks! No problem at all. Glad you liked it.
