The dinginess of a Japanese entertainment district

The crowded nights and bright lights of Shinjuku’s famous Kabukicho red light district do a good job of disguising a lot of its general dinginess. It’s also a fairly similar story when it comes to the much darker reality of what goes on behind the area’s often garishly decorated exteriors.

Away from the capital, however, and in a much smaller city with the time approaching dusk, any hint of glamour surrounding such locations can be considerably harder to find.

Haha, yes, if there ever was, it has now long since gone!

No, it really isn’t. Definitely seen better days that’s for sure.

Great timing with the guy cleaning in the first shot Lee, but the highlight for me is without a doubt the sign.

Thanks a lot. Very happy with how that one came out. And that sign really is special, isn’t it? A stunner in so many ways.

I’m super curious about the last image. Is that two men? This is an adult movie theatre, not a sauna correct? Whether sauna or theatre, I’m surprised to see a gay venue marketing itself with such a clear image outside on the street. Or am misinterpreting this? I would love your perspective and insight.

Yeah, that’s right, and just a cinema I think. Must admit I was surprised (especially in a relatively small city), although possibly even more so by the added hand strap for people to recreate the painting.

No worries at all. And yeah, it’s Kokura in Kitakysuhu.
