The urban colours of an old Tokyo neighbourhood in the rain

Photographing in the rain isn’t something I do all that often. My camera isn’t fully weather sealed, and so an umbrella is necessary. That in itself isn’t such a big deal, but then attempting to focus manually while also keeping a brolly wedged between my neck and shoulder is far from ideal and similarly uncomfortable.

Inclement weather does have its advantages though, and the other day, with spring very much in the air, the dampness did bring out the colours. Below then are some of them, and even better, a few of the scenes are also old favourites.

The colours do pop, especially the red on the van peeping out.
I’m imagining the options for a selfie stick attached to the brolly. However, at the risk of getting wet yourself one of those plastic bag type covers that you tie onto a lens hood and operate glove puppet style might be less precarious. I hope you managed to avoid any incomplete drainpipes on your way.

Yeah, that van is something special. Wondered if it was actually parked like that on purpose. Do hope so.

Yeah, those covers would possibly work, but with no autofocus option, it could end up being more hassle than the brolly. Did manage to avoid any dodgy drainpipes though, so all good.

    Hi Lee,
You need an umbrella with a hot shoe mount!
I’d love to know how long the Casual bike has been stood there…

Haha, yes, that would be one option. The comedy option!

I know eh? By my reckoning at least 10 years. Hopefully good for another 10 as well.

I love the red car looking out. Sooo cute! It could be from a Pixar movie! 🙂

Yeah, that van is absolutely lovely. The star of the show for sure.

That was my biggest gripe when visiting Japan.
    Wet 11 of 20 days.
Standing on footpaths and walking tracks, holding my umbrella, trying to get my camera out and take a nice photo without getting in too many peoples way.
    Loved your pics.

It hasn’t been the best of weather, has it? Warm, mostly, but also mostly wet…

Thank you. All taken exactly the same way as well. Not exactly elegantly.

I like the consistency of colors throughout all of them. They also all feel very peaceful.

Thank you very much. It was definitely the day for certain colours.

The reds, greens, and browns are deeper. Lovely, thanks!

Cheers. Definitely. A real plus of the weather for sure.

Love these shots Lee! You are so right about the colors – pop! – and somehow also inviting.
Do whatever it takes to keep shooting these – Cambrelly?
