Tokyo Marathon 2011

Merely the mention of a marathon — unless the sentence also involves the words drinking and session — is more than enough to make me weak at the knees, so for those who actually do them, I have nothing but the utmost respect. And especially so, like in today’s Tokyo Marathon, when they tackle the challenge with incredible good humour.

Not to mention equally incredible costumes.

For some on the sidelines, however, simply watching was way too much.

Whereas for others, not only competing, but also completing the course, can become a huge cross to bear.

We’d actually joked about seeing such a thing, and then lo and behold, this fella struggled past!

Nice! Did you happen to see Joseph out there with his iRun?

Yes, but I didn’t manage to get a decent shot. Getting any kind of photos wasn’t easy really, what with the crowds, and then the sheer number of runners.

Cheers misiltan. It was difficult with so many people, but I hope they at least capture the mood of the event.

This is fantastic! Nothing like making something as mundane as running a bit more enjoyable.

Thanks Lizzy! I’d never been to a marathon before, and the incredibly good humoured nature of the whole thing was fantastic.

They do the same stuff at Honolulu’s “Aloha Run” though I never saw Jesus.

Yeah, I wasn’t surprised at all to see so many costumes. The sight of Jesus on the other hand, definitely raised an eyebrow or two!

He was. Couldn’t get him in the photo though as he blocked by another runner. The best I got was just half of him

How demoralizing would it be to be beaten to the finish line by the guy in the dog suit? Or by Jesus with his big wooden cross… but hey it’s Jesus.

Yeah, at least with Jesus you could console yourself with the knowledge that he may have had some outside assistance!
