Tokyo’s many large, concrete structures, mean there are always at least some shadows to briefly escape the sweltering summer sun. A genuine blessing, particularly so once utterly boiling August begins. But that said, those same buildings only increase the temperatures further, making the shade nowhere near as restorative as it should be.

Ha, cool shot., hot city! 🙂
Lee says
Cheers! Yes, a very, very hot city…

You do have a way with that lens of yours 🙂 It’s a nice contrast to the cold drizzle I’ve just been walking through, where the only people I passed were drab-clad pensioners dragging small soggy dogs around the village in the grey hours before the streets are heaving with anxious kids starting a new academic year.
This photograph brings to mind a painting by Frank Kelly Freas (http://tinyurl.com/zjn8ej6) for a couple of reasons. One is the slight similarity of the face, but more so is what Freas said about the painting, which was that the it said more about him than he really wanted people to know.

Thank you!
Sounds very different. The cold I wouldn’t mind, but the drizzle not so much. Still, it should start to cool down here as this month goes on. Hope so anyway. And autumn is always a pleasure. Just all too short unfortunately.
Intersting. Both in that the woman’s face made you think of the painting, and the artist’s thoughts on it. Not too sure how true the latter would be in regards photography. Well, street photography anyway. But I guess everyone shoots what interests or speaks to them, which very often gives a lot away about a person’s likes, politics, outlook on life etc.

Nicely done! Summer is long gone for me…… Is it still hot in Tokyo?
Lee says
Thanks! Yes, it is. Very. Today was a scorcher, and the forecast says 33 degrees for tomorrow…

It is a very clean image…

(It took a loong time to find one with shades!)
What with soggy dogs and anxious kids, heaven knows I’m miserable now!
I must avoid beige :O)

Cheers for the link. Really enjoyed looking through those. I’m a big fan of grain, blur and contrast, with the likes of early Klein and Moriyama being stuff I go back to again and again. Often wish I could pull off shots like that, but I’m never quite convinced when I give it a try.
john says
but I’m not sure that Mr Moriyama’s dog was just thinking it was a jolly hot day as your image depicts, and it is certainly more ‘high noon’ and immediate than in the somewhat thematic link.
Lee says
No, not at all. Producing an image as iconic as that is the stuff dreams are made of. He managed a good number of them too. But in the absence of a dream coming true, the joy of documenting the world around me will have to do.

would it be cooler up on that roof garden reflected in the glass above the young woman???
Lee says
It would. And it’d be much, much cooler if the roof garden was one of the many that serve beer!

Great composition here.

Thank you very much. Had no time to think about this one at all, so very pleased the way it came out.
