Tokyo wrestler, a street portrait

One of the key benefits of living in Tokyo is that you never really know what — or perhaps more accurately who — is going to greet you round the next corner. It could be a man carrying a huge tortoise. Maybe even a young bloke in the shortest of very short shorts. Or in this case, merely a bare-chested wrestler taking a post-bout rest.

Haha, he’s the first I’ve ever seen, so don’t get your hopes up!

Very minimalist and low on the gimmicks? I don’t think there would be much chance
of seeing similar in the back streets of Manchester in January, even if he had a furry leotard or a thermal Ninja Turtle outfit. Today’s new word – “Puroresu”. Nice portrait!

Cheers. And yeah, never saw a wrestler out on the streets when I lived there, let alone a backstreet.

It was the minimalist element that appealed. A real old school look eh? In fact he reminded me of Giant Baba, even though he is far from a giant and doesn’t look anything like the man. But he only wore simple trunks, just like Mr Baba.

He was a big fella, not to be confused with Sai Baba the metaphysical wrestler, who didn’t wear trunks.

Yes, definitely best not to get those two mixed up!
