Tranquil time out #81

The ability of some Japanese to sleep practically anywhere, particularly when it’s somewhere very public, never ceases to amaze me. And this fella, with his shoes off and sheet down, looks like he couldn’t be anymore comfortable if he was flat out on a futon.

I can never understand how everyone wakes up in time to get off the train/subway at the correct station. I also saw someone asleep whilst he was just leaning against a wall.

My theory is that although many people have their eyes shut, they aren’t necessarily sleeping, just creating their own bit of privacy amongst all those people. That said, a fair few definitely do sleep as it’s possible to hear them snoring, so how they manage it I really don’t know. Some kind of evolutionary body clock maybe?

It’s amazing that the Japanese can fall alseep just about anywhere. My wife is the same… whereas about the only time I fall asleep easily these days is watching a movie on the couch after a glasses of red. If only that ability could be bottled… er… I guess it has.

I would love to live in a place where I could just pull up a bench and nap without fear of robbery or worse. I hope to see many many more public naps in the future. The hope, of course, being that the secure feeling of being able to do so isn’t lost.

Yes, it’s to Tokyo’s credit that people can happily do this. No doubt about. And don’t worry Lizzy, you’ll definitely get to see more!

No problem Joel. Happy to hear it makes you feel that way. To back that feeling up a little further, fairly recently I saw a fella fast asleep on the train, in the seat right by the door, with his iPad resting on his lap. And that, at least while I was on the train, is where is stayed.
