Mascot mayhem

”This could only happen in a country that is so open to immaturity. Authorities here feel it’s easier and less threatening to use characters to get the public to accept them, rather than explain the facts”

Psychiatrist and author Rika Kayama’s somewhat scathing attack on the use of cartoon character Prince Pickles as Japan’s Self-Defence Forces mascot.

Whilst the rather unusually named Prince Pickles may indeed be a little on the cute side to be representing the nation’s trained troops, Kayama-san’s comments do seem a little over the top. I mean, it’s not as though, say, the police force have a similarly silly symbol.

Well, apart from perky wee Pipo that is.

However in his defence he does have the important role of reminding the more forgetful members of society what the force’s emergency number is — making him much more than a mere mascot.

And then admittedly the fire and ambulance fleet do have cuddly young Kyuta, but as well as offering the same number based service as Pipo,

the fearless little fella is dedicated to detecting emergency calls with his antenna-equipped headwear, tirelessly tending to the teeming masses of Tokyo.

Clearly proving that Ms Kayama doesn’t have a clue what she is talking about.

Bawling babies

Saturday saw Saikyoji Temple in Nagasaki Prefecture hold its annual baby crying competition, an event that pits the region’s yelling youngsters against one another in a sumo-style setting — the first toddler to cry after being tormented and terrified by the priest declared the winner.

Should both babies start sobbing at the same time however, the more booming bawler is awarded the victory. A ruling that certainly wasn’t required in the bout pictured below, with the little chap on the left comfortably securing the win.

The overall champion is rumoured to secure a selection of sedatives and five free visits to a child therapist.

Happily hoodwinked

tokyo pachinko

Roughly translated into pachinko parlance as, ‘please come in and smoke yourself silly* whilst gambling away all your money trying to desperately divert bucket loads of ball bearings.’

Pearls aplenty

Aimed to coincide with Monday’s Coming-of-age Day, actress Satomi Ishihara has been named ‘Best Pearl Dresser’ among 20-year-olds for 2007. An award in no way designed to blatantly promote a product, but instead to celebrate the beauty of Japanese youth.

Not only that, but the prestigious prize it seems has already boosted Ishihara-san’s popularity, with a long line of fans frantically fumbling for their fit to burst wallets and offering to give the young actress as many pearl necklaces as she wants.

Or something along those lines.

Dog fighting diversion?

Perhaps hoping to take some of the heat off their whale hunting and dolphin killing countrymen, the residents of Kochi in western Japan held one of their traditional dog fighting contests over the weekend, with tenacious Tosa dogs tackling each other’s, erm, tackle.

The fights themselves, whilst far from affable, are thankfully not to the death, with a set of judges scoring the animals on temperament, stamina and injuries inflicted, allowing successful entrants to gradually work their way up the ranks — the top slot being reserved for the Yokozuna.

Like this cuddly looking companion for example.

For a bit more in-depth info, this post in the Tokyo Times archive is possibly worth a peek.

Or not as the case may be.
