Beastly backpacks

For Japanese elementary school students, these bulky and bland bags are standard issue; kids the length and breadth of the country weighed down with their colossal size and cumbersome design.

Yet for parents looking for something just a little bit different, help is finally at hand, this collection of beast-skinned backpacks offering a real alternative.

As a mid-range introduction, the wild boar option could be a wise move — its furry finish a definite plus point. And it’s a snip at only 500,000 yen (2,436 pound).

However for those on the look out for a bag with a little more class and colour, the zebra clad carryall is ideal; although priced at a steady 1 million yen (4,853 pound), it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Yet for the truly ostentatious, this heady mix of snake and frog skin is arguably unbeatable — the inclusion of a liberal amount of gold further adding to its allure. Plus with a price tag of 1.3 million yen (6,307 pound), it’s guaranteed to cause something of a stir on the school bus.

And if you somehow remain unconvinced, just look how cute they are.

Nail related nonsense

Whilst the annual ‘Nail Queen Awards’ may not be the most prestigious prize ceremony in the world, it nevertheless didn’t stop this year’s winners from waxing lyrically about their fingernail fashion.

Becky, pictured above and winner of the television personality category, gushed, “Being chosen as a nail queen was my goal this year. I’m so happy that dream has come true.” Yet just when you thought she had her tongue firmly embedded in her cheek, the 21-year-old showed off her treasure chest themed nails and exclaimed, “I like showy and sparkly things.”

Other winners of the event, sponsored by the Japan Nailist Association, included Aya Ueto. The popular actress giving a more practical reason for her love of coloured nails. “Up until two years ago I had a habit of biting my fingernails, but I overcame that habit after starting nail art.” The picture below amply proving this, her perfectly shaped nails looking especially attractive.

Rather surprisingly, the event also boasted the inclusion of a men’s section, with TM Revolution’s Takanori Nishikawa scooping the top prize.

Bouffant balls-up

Apparent regulations that require at least one hairdressing shop on every single street in Tokyo, could now be on the verge of collapsing; after a disgruntled customer successfully sued her stylist for a supposedly horrible haircut.

The plaintiff was a 27-year-old cabaret club hostess, and despite only receiving 240,000 yen (1,160 pound) — following a 6 million yen compensation claim — the ruling could set a worrying precedent for the nation’s hordes of hairdressers.

Presiding Judge, Yuki Mizuno, explained the court’s decision by saying, “Hairstyles are a major influence on appearance. A hairstyle is a selling point for a cabaret club hostess and there was a period when her self-confidence was affected when she waited on customers.”

The woman’s claim it seems was based on the issue of her haircut being shorter than she requested — and also the wrong colour. This allegedly leaked photo proving that the young woman may have been justified in her actions.

Warm wonder

As the government’s Warm Biz energy saving campaign kicks into top gear, underwear maker Triumph International has come up with the fashionable little number pictured below. A garment that at first glance may appear a little cold for the office, but its use of an infrared thermal lining (whatever one of those is) means that the wearer should barely feel the cold.

The added inclusion of bra gel-pads, that can be heated in a microwave and then placed into the cups, means busty bureaucrats will be both snug and sexy. Their inclusion allegedly catching the eye of Kuniko Inoguchi, Minister of State for Gender Equality, and also — perhaps appropriately — Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Measures for Declining Birthrate.
