Japanese whale whoppers

In the last few months, Japan has come under ever increasing criticism over its ‘scientific’ whale hunts, with Australia in particular condemning the culls. However, while it is difficult to condone the killing of such incredible cetaceans, it simply cannot be said that the Japanese don’t take their research seriously, with very little of the mammals left untast untested.

And while critics claim that the results from non-lethal techniques could prove to be equally as productive, proponents opine they would be far less palatable.

Japanese bar ban

With its claim of being Asian as well as Japanese,

and boasting a colourful and compelling entrance to boot,

this bar looks like a decent spot to down a few drinks in.

Although while the door is just about ajar, for non-Japanese lacking the lingo, it is just about jammed shut.

Japanese cooking and cosplay combo

With approximately 99.8% of Japanese television shows focusing on food, and only the odd soupcon of sauciness to spice proceedings up somewhat, schedulers appear to have sensed that something a little less commonplace is called for.

However, while cosplay might well boast a growing contingent of converts, combining it with cooking may well have something of a limited life span.

Free fugu?

Fresh fugu (puffer fish) from a fully licensed place like this one in Tokyo will probably be a bit pricey.

However, for this famously poisonous fish, qualifications really do count, and the cost of improper preparation can end up being far higher than a fancy meal out. Something a 60-year-old man from Hiroshima sadly found out far too late, after his home-cooked dinner came back to haunt him — quite literally.

Although his wife, who was either lucky or simply didn’t like the look of it, survived.

Shinjuku lunch lure

With Tokyo boasting more ramen shops than something with a significantly sizeable number, the competition is understandably cut-throat, with proprietors pulling out all the stops to persuade punters to part with their hard earned pennies.

But enormous bowls and the purported nature of the broth aside, the perky nature of this winking little woman will no doubt appeal to more than a few patrons.

Perhaps.
