Mildly amusing English usage #1

Salvation

Last week marked the end of the school year in Japan. And in class, the Japanese teacher I work with announced that it was the last English lesson.

There were the usual (and predictable) responses, except for one young fella. Who with perfect timing and intonation, raised his hands aloft and cried.

“Salvation!”

Sadly, just like at the cinema, I was the only one laughing. Even the boy who produced the gem wasn’t aware of his unique comic talent.

Where on earth he learnt the word I don’t know, but I’m glad he did.

Schoolboy humour #2

Recently I saw something in the newspaper that really amused me. But it is rather childish. Hence the title.

Printed below is a message from the personal section. I was just looking ok? And when reading it, remember that san placed after a name is an honorific title. Similar to Mr.

“My dearest Junko. This past year has been the best 12 months of my life. Happy anniversary. I love you with all my heart. Love from Wankasan”

That’s one unlucky name. Now I know it’s neither big nor clever to laugh at the misfortune of others, but…

Mildly amusing Japanese-English #7

Sexy football

This is taking liberties a bit, as the phrase isn’t actually used. Not yet that it is. But at the match last Saturday, the crowd were promised a new English footballing expression every home game. And for reasons unknown, sexy football was first out of the bag.

The term was explained at great length, and was even put up on the big screen for added emphasis. It’s just a matter of time now to see if the fans adopt it. I hope so, if only for my own amusement. And if you don’t believe me, here’s photographic evidence.

Mildly amusing Japanese-English #6

Nice on!

There are lots of English words (or variations of them) used on the golf course, but nice on! is my personal favourite. It can be heard all over the course, as any shot that results in the ball finishing on the green is met with a hearty cry of nice on!.

This is ok if you’ve just nailed a 4 iron into the heart of the green, but it does have a tendency to wear a little thin. Especially when your fluffed chip shot just about manages to trundle onto the putting surface, miles away from the flag, and is met with an enthusiastic bellow of nice on! from your playing partners.

Learn Japanese. And have fun!

This animation is very funny. It starts off slowly, but soon picks up. Even if you don’t know any Japanese, I think the humour will still shine through.

A lot of the words are simply places in Tokyo. With the odd bit of food thrown in for good measure.
