Yoyogi’s rockabilly boys

Considering that Yoyogi Park’s much-pictured rockabilly dancers were one of the first things I ever saw in Tokyo, the disappointment of slowly finding out that all the city’s green spaces aren’t frequented by phenomenally quiffed fruggers has been decidedly difficult to deal with to say the least; however, on a recent Sunday saunter around Harajuku, it was nice to see that despite a certain amount of posturing,

and meticulous preparation,

the practice is not only ongoing, but is still, above everything else, focused very much on fun.

and more than a fair bit of flamboyance.

Tranquil time out #63

The sight of musicians presumably not wanting to annoy their neighbours with noise by practicing outside are a fairly common sight in Tokyo, especially so when it comes to wind instruments.

Little old ladies cranking out chords on keyboards on the other hand are, somewhat sadly, considerably less common.

The soothing sounds of which can be sampled here:

And, after taking these few photos, I left her to it, blissfully unaware of other people,

or indeed even the park’s, presence.

Sax in the city

If one’s neighbours are incredibly near, or alternatively are really not at all keen on noise, then for those after some sax on a Sunday morning, a secluded spot down by the river is a passable, if not exactly perfect, solution.

And as such, the sound of one particular fella’s surprisingly unselfconscious solo performance can be heard here:

Listen!

But despite his apparent pleasure,

as far as inspiration goes, the surrounding features are far from stirring.

Let alone stimulating.

Karuizawa karma

The popular tourist town of Karuizawa is tremendously well known in its own right, and, being in the mountains, it’s especially busy in the summer months, as it makes the muggy weather much more manageable.

However, that said, several seasons spent there by a certain singer in the late 1970s has forever linked the location with Lennon.

And yet, rather ironically, the town owes all its success to another foreigner, a Canadian missionary named Alexander Croft Shaw, who, after first visiting in 1886, enthusiastically introduced the area to other expatriates and missionaries, setting in motion Karuizawa’s transformation into a summer retreat and tourist town.

Now though, there are only a few monuments and mostly just memories of the past, but there is — not that it has any connection to missionaries or the mega famous — an absolutely marvellous amount of moss.

More in fact than even the most ardent moss admirer could ever imagine.

Along with fantastically off-kilter constructions.

And the only remaining wooden and western designed hotel in the country.

A building that sadly ceased being accommodation in 1970, quite possibly due to its limited opening opportunities, as even at this time of year it is uncomfortably cold to say the least.

Although thankfully nearby there are warming wonders of nature,

Which once again brings us back to that well-known Western warbler.

Japanese amphetamine fun?

With marijuana-related cases rapidly rising in Japan and the authorities terrified of people having too much fun or dabbling with other drugs, it could be argued that despite such concerns, some campaigns are still sending out decidedly mixed messages.

speed Japan

Maybe.
