When walking around Tokyo and see a lot of shops like this, it makes me wonder how they get by.

Amazing how many of them there are, isn’t it? I can only presume that they own the building, so there’s no rent to pay. Plus with a pension, it doesn’t really matter whether they make any money or not.

I really don’t know. I own my apartment here in Tokyo and property tax can be expensive plus I’ve heard that pensions don’t pay a lot, so I really think these people are doing it tough. On the bright side, it does look like the type of place that could be used as a set for “Midnight Diner” on Netflix.

Yeah, good call on the taxes. Upkeep too, although that’s clearly not a big expenditure here! In that sense, when it’s a shop that’s part of their house, just continuing the business for the sake of it makes some kind of sense, but if it’s a completely different building, then yes, they really could have it tough.

Thank you. The metal in the middle where the shutter comes down definitely helps with that split element. When I set up the shot up, she wasn’t looking round, but I sensed my presence would cause her to do so, and thankfully she did!

Interesting shot. I’m embarrassed to say I figured it was 2 people on first look! 🙂
