Almost comically compact Japanese car

No doubt due to concerns about cost and fuel economy, mini-cars in Japan continue to be top sellers, and Toyota’s recent decision to hire 800 temporary workers in a bid to keep up with demand for the Prius proves that even when an elfin form isn’t a factor, fuel efficiency is.

Yet that said, this quest for compactness and economy can sometimes go too far, as although a convertible, the contraption below looks uncomfortable to say the least. And cool doesn’t even come into it.

Plus whatever make it may be, although it’s probably not a Honda,

it’s hand luggage only along with potentially perilous situations aplenty.

Tranquil time out #56

When the late summer heat or the hustle and bustle of the city gets a bit unbearable, there are thankfully still plenty of places where one can get some shade and at least a certain amount of silence.

Well and truly abandoned wedding hall (part 2)

After a look in Part 1 at the amazingly melancholy main halls with their collapsed cakes and faded furnishings, the Heiankaku wedding complex may well have been forgiven for not offering up any further finds, but, perhaps in keeping with its previous purpose, it very generously goes on giving.

So thankfully there are still plenty of other reminders of its past to peruse.

And probably nowhere is this more apparent than in a room round the back, where blushing brides were busily made to blush that little bit more.

But now, the almost magical properties of a blow dry and a bit of Epsom Brill are merely memories.

Although a bow, possibly left by the building’s last bride, is a little more real, if rather ragged.

Plus down corridors where proud parents and well-wishers once wandered, there is now no more vitality, merely vandalism.

Mother Nature can slowly but surely begin to claim back the complex — gradually furnishing everything with flora,

and a furry, conspicuously fetid, covering.

Until eventually, perhaps, those that forged a bond here will be forever forgotten.

Mildly endearing amendment

English language lapses in Japan are admittedly an easy target, but those that are a bit saucy or manage to be more than a wee bit misleading, arguably merit at least the odd mention.

As, perhaps, do those that have been almost endearingly adjusted after a minor mistake has been mentioned.

Fashionable Japanese photographers?

For Japanese men of a certain age, multi-pocketed vests are unfathomably deemed as desirable — de rigueur even.

But for photographing festivals,

it seems that these trusty little tunics also need to be supplemented with tightly rolled towels,
