The sport of kings (and possibly queens)

Japan it has to be said is not averse to borrowing things from other countries and then changing them; more often than not for the better. Take Tokyo’s train system for example, as after bringing in British engineers to design the original network, they have developed it into a system envied throughout the world. A far cry indeed from what now constitutes a train ‘service’ in the original engineers’ homeland.

Similarly, horse racing is another thing that has been enthusiastically borrowed from Britain, and whilst many of the traditions have remained intact, they have also been adjusted to suit Japan. Like dressing up for instance. As whilst fancy hats are de rigeur at Royal Ascot, frilly dresses are deemed more desirable in Japan.

At least for the more adventurous.

Pokemon, and on, and on…

Hot on the heels of the Hello Kitty empire, the people behind Pokemon appear bent on peddling an absolute plethora of products bearing pictures of Pikachu and his moneymaking pals.

And with the Japanese toy market now absolutely teeming with such stuff, food would appear to be the next target.

Cosmetics and condoms are coming soon.

Apparently.

Waste matter wearables

The Japanese affection for faeces is fairly well known, with toilet-related toys and attachments proving especially popular. And considering the nation’s similar fondness for fashion, it was perhaps inevitable that the two would one day form a formidable partnership – boldly blazing a trail for both the bowels and big brands.

Although that said, this hat may not exactly be deemed desirable by the more discerning fashionista. In fact, far from being fawned over, it may even be poo-pooed by some.

Perhaps.

Mass maid

Japanese maid uniform makers must certainly be making a lot money these days, with all manner of maid cafes — from the mundane to the mature — wanting made to measure work wear.

Yet sales must come from more than just the cafe contingent, as the shop below amply proves, stocking nothing but the slightly risqué regalia.

The ideal-for-lounging-around-the-house nature of the apparel quite possibly having something to do with it.

Or not as the case may be.

Tokyo towel titillation

Towels with pretty patterns or big brand names emblazoned on them are especially popular in Japan, but for the bloke who prefers to rub himself off with something a little more racy, then this boob-based offering may (or indeed may not) be perfect.
