Sharp shoes

Presumably not completely happy with his off-the-shelf shoes, Seitaro Kasai decided to give them something of a personal touch; however rather than simply choosing some lavishly coloured laces, the 31-year-old inexplicably opted to add several nails to his footwear — each one sticking out a millimetre or two from the toe area.

With his wearable weapons complete, Kasai then went in search of a victim, and after choosing a 28-year-old woman in front of Tokyo’s busy Shibuya Station, he set about kicking her repeatedly in the calf muscles. Yet despite suffering injuries, the unnamed lady was strong enough to drag the deranged Kasai into a nearby police box, where he was promptly arrested.

Officers later seized two more pairs of similarly modified shoes from Kasai’s home, and under questioning the accused explained his victim was chosen due to a strong desire to “injure the legs of a woman with a good figure.”

Tokyo trawlers

Ok, if that’s your thing,

yes lets

then yes, let’s.

However the swan themed boats rather than their cute-as-can-be whale alternatives are a much safer option.

food for thought

As just out of shot is the ‘Let’s whaling’ centre, a far more popular venture that rents out pedal-powered whaling vessels complete with functioning harpoons; its customers earning an extra 15 minutes out on the water for every ‘whale’ they manage to bag.

A government sponsored educational scheme aimed at furthering interest in cultural activities and scientific research.

World Cup wake-up

“You do realise if we lose the next game it’s over, don’t you? Do you all want to go home? If you don’t, you’d better start playing a lot better and showing some guts.”

Japan coach Zico’s ‘pep talk’ to his players in the build-up to the team’s must win game against Croatia.

Whether the squad turned as one to reply, “And are you aware that if you continue to lack even a modicum of tactical mastery we’ll struggle to win no matter how hard we try”, wasn’t disclosed.

Strenuous stroll

On a nice sunny day, kids appear to like nothing better than running and playing in the park, enjoying the freedom and fres being pulled around the park by their hot and harassed teachers.

Tokyo tinkle

For the commuter who simply can’t get enough of being pushed and prodded onto a busy train, help is finally at hand — or at least at the foot of the futon. This awfully geeky alarm clock adding a little rattle and roll to weekday awakenings.

yamanote line clock

Yet as impressive to look at as this miniature recreation of Tokyo’s Yamanote loop line is, it’s nothing compared to the clock’s chipper chimes. Based on several stations mindless squeeze-in-everybody-the doors-are-about-to-close music, it includes such classic compositions as Shinjuku’s timeless ‘Twilight’, and Ikebukuro’s sumptuous ‘Spring Box’. Melodies so memorable they’ll have even the most brow-beaten salary man bursting out of bed and whistling his way to work. A selection of samples stored on this site give a good idea of some of the delightful ditties on offer.

Such gems make the clock something of a steal at 7,980 yen (38 pound); and for an extra 300 yen it can be delivered to the station of your choice — elevating the experience even further.

Perhaps.
