Publicly sleeping off a very big night out

One more photo to add to my on-going series of Japanese men and women very publicly passed out after knocking back absolutely gargantuan amounts of alcohol.

A Japanese man drunk and asleep in Tokyo

I am never sure what to think about these kinds of pictures. Are you really sure they are all just drunk……..?

Yeah, definitely drunk. It’s generally pretty easy to tell, not just in their appearance and smell, but also location. Obviously they won’t be well when they wake up, but headaches and very likely nausea aside, they aren’t otherwise ill.

Another fine photograph of a theme that looks and feels uniquely Japanese.
It’s not unusual in most societies for people of all walks to find themselves at one time or another subject to the disabling effects of an ill-advised or badly misjudged drinking session. The positive aspects that make this such a Japanese thing in these photographs is that quietly lying down in a corner somewhere is the solution, and that tolerance is the reaction of passers-by and authorities.
As for the chance it’s not alcohol related, context make it unlikely in most cases, but I’ve seen similar attended to by police both personally and in other photographs, so my thought is that an otherly distressed person would get assistance sooner rather than later.

Thanks. Yeah, it really does seem to be a uniquely Japanese thing, doesn’t it?

Agreed. If alerted, or if they are in an especially public place, then the police usually step in, but like you say, unless such people are in any kind of distress, then they are simply left to sleep it off. Good that’s the case, and bad so many people seem to end up in such a state, but sometimes it’s necessary to let off some steam. For some it’s just a lot of steam!
