Shinjuku has been a happy hunting ground over the years, with some of my most complete photo series shot on the city’s wonderfully unpredictable streets — the recently posted alleyway set being the latest. Images that took a decade to put together.
It is though a part of the capital that keeps on giving, and wandering the area for just a few hours last week, I was reminded once again why I keep returning.

Dark side of the moon 🙂

Yes. The t-shirt seemed very apt.

Great photos. What are your thoughts on privacy protection? Do you ask permission when you shoot…?
Lee says
Thank you very much.
I prefer not to ask. Candid shots are what I prefer, although when it feels necessary to ask, I do. Like the last photo in this series.

Cracking set. Such a great place to see people being themselves.
Is that an off duty Shinjuku Tiger?
A treat to see the Maki Asakawa bar. Listening to her Rear Window album as I type.

Thanks a lot.
Yes, it really is. A place I never get tired of visiting.
It’s not. The owner of a rock bar apparently. A nice little detail I was very pleased to learn.
Oh, nice. That portrait is one I’ve always enjoyed seeing. It fascinates me each and every time I pass by.

I want to go to the 24 hour restaurant for a special set meal, and I want to invite the guy with the beard and the hat to come with me, because I want to know his story.
Lee says
I know eh? I was similarly intrigued by him. A brief encounter that stayed with me the whole day.
