Stares and beers in a Tokyo bar

Some places are way more photogenic than others, and despite the limited space, the bar below is definitely one to go back to — hence its numerous appearances on these pages over the years. It has arguably the grubbiest lamp one could ever imagine. Character and customer-wise it sometimes seems like it’s stuck in the past. Plus inquisitive stares are often an additional part of the scene. The latter of which I got lucky with again in this latest photo.

So the bar with the freaky lamp has become a regular for you? Cool!

Well, more a regular spot to take photos than regular drinking, but it is a cool little spot.

It is good to know that some things do not change You’l be a regular, soon you’ll have your own bottle with your name on it behind the bar 🙂

Haha, maybe! But yeah, in a city that changes so much, it is nice to see some things stay the same. Especially so when it’s somewhere genuinely interesting.

It’s in Shinjuku. Not far at all from the station. If we want an exact location I can send you a map.

Yes, please send me a map. I’ll try it out. I imagine the Shochu is a bargain.

I love the half-surprised and friendly eye contact in this one. The relax attitude of the young guy on one side, and the hazy light on the other is a good composition. I would also love to have the map to that bar. But, as no-one I know would be ready to go have a drink with me in that type of bar, I would be actually honoured to share a drink with you or Judy sometime!

Thanks! Yeah, I was pleased the way it came out. Always nice to get eye-contact.

More than happy to meet for a drink some time. Especially somewhere interesting like this place too.

Lee, thanks so much for the map. Valerie, count me in. Would love to meet up and check this bar out with both of you. I’ll be back to Tokyo on 21 March and will contact you then.

Great! Lee, I’ll send you a little email at the time of Judy’s return then. You’ll decide the place!

Excellent. Looks like we have a plan. Or at least a plan in the making!
