Due to regular rotation in the Japanese education system, from this week I’ve started at a new school. And judging by my first 10 minutes in the place, it could be an interesting year.
Having only just found my desk, the English teacher came over and quickly got his introduction out of the way. He then wasted no time in telling me that the previous day a man (naked from the waist down) had been spotted masturbating whilst watching some of the students play tennis.
With the new school year not yet fully underway, heaven knows what’s to come!

Did he walk all the way to the school naked from the waist down? Or did he just take off his bottom half once he got to the school? And did they call the police?

Unbeleivably the police weren’t called. After the kids shouted to the teachers, the man escaped on his bicycle. Presumably without pants! Whether or not he arrived there wothout them I have no idea.
When the teacher was telling me, I was both surprised and amused. But then yesterday, another teacher said she was surprised by my reaction. As such behaviour is apparently not uncommon at this time of year.
So whilst not actually condoning the man’s actions, nobody seemed particularly bothered either!

Can be a little unnerving sometimes. I was a teacher in Japan for a couple of years, most disturbing story was of a middle aged guy who “volunteered” at an orphanage, brought beer and tried to get a severely mentally retarded 15-year-old girl drunk. No one else seemed bothered.
