The old and incredibly dated shopping streets of Osaka

For me at least there’s so much to like about Osaka. Elements of which I wrote about in my latest newsletter. And without a doubt one of the city’s key photographic attributes is its maze of old and dated shopping streets — half shuttered up and mostly covered arcades that feel like stepping back in time in regards both their looks and the people who inhabit them.

Below then are photos from a recent trip when I had the pleasure of spending several days walking some of my favourite areas. Locations where the streets and residents’ faces are filled with stories, and in so many ways, where the past feels far more real than the present.

So good as always, Lee. I really like the gritty nature of these.

Thank you very much. It really is like nowhere else in Japan.

Yeah, those scenes are something else. The flag and the decay surrounding it aways feels very poignant.

It is suprising how colourful these old shopping streets feel, even on overcast days. Even without the wonderful Tamade supermarkets (good cheap food with the feel of a pachinko parlour) the awnings, crates, banners and signs (love that photogrphy shop sign) fill the streets with colour.

Yeah, that’s very true. So much to take in on these streets. No matter how many times I visit, there is always something new I notice.
