Tranquil time out #71

When it comes to tranquilness, or merely taking some time out, a big cup of tea always takes some beating.

Lee, can you explain the contraption the tea pot is hanging from? Thanks!

      I’ll try.

It’s used to hang the pot or kettle over an irori, a kind of traditional sunken hearth. There’s one of my pictures here which might give you a slightly better idea. And there’s a wiki entry here.

Either just the hook or the whole thing is called a jizaikagi (I think), and as far as I know it’s used to allow the pot to be moved up or down over the small fire in the hearth.

Hope that helps. At least a bit anyway.

Not sure I’d want it in my house, but it is beautiful!

Thanks! I can’t remember exactly to be honest. Only that it was in one of those relocated and rebuilt old house that every city seems to have. And that it was somewhere in the Chofu/Fuchu area.
